Physical decluttering is not the only part of my minimal-ish journey. I’m also trying to get rid of some of the junk that is clogged up in my mind. I find that when my environment (physical or mental) is cleared out, I feel more at peace.
Here are some things I do to clear my thoughts and declutter my mind.
Write It Down and Prioritize It.
Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the thoughts in my mind, the first thing I do is write down what is consuming my thoughts. Then I prioritize the list of things I wrote down by deadline or by if it really needs my attention. And I ask myself what is really important and what is some made up BS pressure I put on myself.
Tackle One Thing
When I decide to tackle the items of concern, I actually set aside time to focus on one particular task and try to avoid any other distractions. I will literally close the door to keep out all distractions. I do this to be laser focused, and to avoid the mistake of trying to multitask. I’m able to clear my mind faster when I’m focused on one thing at a time. By checking items off of my mental list, I am able to remove what has been consuming my mind.
Talk it Out
If I’m feeling really overwhelmed, I talk through my frustrations with a loved one. I go to someone who I know are willing to listen and actually help me decipher if something is really worth worrying about. It’s good to have people in your life who give perspective from the outside.
Walk It Out
When I really need to, I just go for walk or go exercise because when I am in nature or doing something mindless and repetitive in nature, I am able to clear my head.
Take a Social Media Break
Also, taking a break from social media and putting down my phone for a day(s) does wonders for a cluttered mind. We are living in a time where we bombarded with things consuming our brains nonstop, so sometimes, you have to just “force quit” to refresh your mind.
Go on Vacation
If I can afford it, I will take a vacation. I only say this because I love to travel, but in all honesty, when I go on vacation, I can reflect on what is really important. It doesn’t have to be somewhere far away, it can be to a nearby town or staycation somewhere to change environments to get a fresh perspective on things. Some of my favorite vacations are when I go away and do nothing except be pampered.
Ask for Help
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you really need it. Being overwhelmed can easily be solved with a helping hand.
I am learning that half of the mess and clutter in my mind is something I put there– and it really isn’t something I have to do. Sometimes I just have to say F-it and move on. Also, I’m learning to say “No, Nope, Nah I’m good or Maybe next time” more often, which also helps to declutter my mind (and time). I’m just trying to center my chi and hopefully these tips when help you center yours too.
