I loooove me a delicious hot drink, and I admit…I miss rolling up to Starbucks and ordering a hot matcha green latte. That first sip gives me all the feels. But I’m not going to Starbucks anytime soon, so I’ve perfected my at-home matcha green tea latte.
I used to make matcha green tea lattes periodically, but since we’ve been quarantined, it’s part of my daily morning (or noon-ish) routine. And I must say, Starbucks may be taking a backseat once the world is back open. I’ve saved so much money…but I’ll save that topic for another day. Until we’re all released into the wild, I will be sipping on this each day.
So, What is Matcha?
Matcha has Japanese origins and it’s basically a powered green tea. It is made from the whole tea leaf that is ground into a fine powder. Usually, green tea leaves are steeped in water, but with matcha, you’re drinking the entire powdered leaf. It has about half the amount of caffeine of coffee and you can drink it hot or cold. There is lots of info out there about matcha (it’s a thing now…not just trend anymore). So, if you want to know more…you know the routine (google it). I’m just giving you a general overview of what I know.
All I know is that I like the taste. Note, all matcha is not created equally, so you may have to try a few before you find one that you like. Some describe matcha as having an “earthy” taste, while others say it’s an acquired taste. My taste buds lean more towards liking more natural and less sugary tasting drinks, so this is right up my alley. Of course, you can sweeten this drink to your liking, but I personally don’t like it too sweet.
Why I Love It
Not only does it taste good, but from what I heard, matcha is filled with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins. It also helps me to stay full throughout the morning.
Beautify Your Matcha
To make my beautiful matcha, I add in a scoop of collagen. Collagen is the secret ingredient that makes my matcha morning so beautiful. It is tasteless and dissolves so easily into hot drinks, which is why I love adding it to my matcha.
Collagen has many benefits, such as healthy digestion and gut health, it improves muscle recovery, and promotes skin elasticity, strong nails and healthy hair. Real talk…collagen is actually one of my top beauty secrets. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my skin and nails since taking it. It’s something that I don’t ever see myself stopping. I absolutely love it.
The collagen also adds a little bit more froth to the matcha, which makes it absolutely beautiful inside and out. And who doesn’t love frothy drinks?
How I Make It
I usually make a standard mug size, so I guess you can say about a 12 oz cup is good size to make a beautiful matcha. The amount of ingredients you use will vary by how milky, frothy and sweet you want your matcha to taste.
Ingredients
- 1 packet or scoop of matcha powder (just follow suggested amount on the matcha container)
- hot water (I have a tea kettle that I use to heat my water on the stove)
- “milk” of choice (I usually use coconut milk, almond milk or french vanilla creamer)
- 1 scoop of collagen powder (I call this my beauty booster)
- 1 dash of cinnamon
- 1 tsp of honey to sweeten (optional)
Prepare a Cup
- Fill cup or mug with hot water up 3/4 of way up.
- Add in matcha powder and collagen (stir or whisk it up)
- Add in milk of choice (you can warm up the milk if you want, but my water is always so piping hot that I don’t need to heat it up)
- Whisk, vehemently stir, or do as I do and froth is up with your hand held frother until it’s a uniform consistency. (the key is to avoid any lumping)
- Top with a dash a cinnamon (stir again if desired)
Side note: I always use my hand-held frother to blend my beautiful matcha. It’s my secret weapon for make my drinks super frothy. Make sure the batteries are new so that is spins really fast to have super frothiness!
Sip on This
This is a drink that you should savor. It’s so yummy and it curbs my appetite for a few hours. I can’t explain it, but it’s provides me with energy and relaxation at the same time. It’s the perfect drink to get my day started. If you try it, let me know what you think.
Do you drink matcha green tea? Have you tried to make your own (beautiful) matcha latte at home?
xo,
